Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding

1 cup coarsely chopped pecans, walnuts or almonds

1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla
Ingredients for Brown Sugar Sauce:

cuppacked brown sugar

tablespoonscornstarch
·

cupwater
· 
·2/3
cuphalf-and-half or light cream
· 
·1/4
cuplight-colored corn syrup
· 
·2
tablespoonsbutter
· 
·1
teaspoonvanilla
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
½ cup water
2/3 cup half and half or light cream
¼ cup light corn syrup
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
Directions for Bread Pudding:
1.        Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2.        Place dry bread crumbs in a well-greased 13x9 inch casserole dish. 
3.       Sprinkle chocolate chips and nuts on the bread crumbs and set aside.
4.       In a large bowl, mix together eggs, milk, sugar and vanilla.  Pour mixture over bread mixture and gentle push down the bread making sure the bread absorbs the egg mixture.
5.       Bake uncovered for 50-60 minutes or until a knife inserted comes out clean.  If the top starts to over-brown, cover with foil. 
6.       Serve warm with Brown Sugar Sauce.
Directions for Sauce:
1.        In a heavy saucepan, stir together the brown sugar and cornstarch.  Stir in water.
2.       Add cream, corn syrup and butter.  Cook and stir until bubbly; then cook 2 minutes more.
3.       Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
4.       Serve warm over bread pudding.
