Cook burgers on the grill, in grill pan or skillet until no longer pink in the middle, about 5-7 minutes on each side. Melt cheese slices on each burger.
In a medium skillet, drizzle olive then add onions. Cook onions until they are caramelized.
Spread bread slices with butter and toast in the skillet.
Assemble patty melt by placing cheeseburgers over one slice of bread.
Top with onions and other piece of bread.
